For both domestic and international publishers the event is a watershed moment, adding Myanmar to the list of countries where book-selling online is becoming the New Normal.
Back in 2019 the bookselling phenomenon that is Malaysia-based Big Bad Wolf debuted in Yangon, Myanmar, with 1 million English-language books stacked high in its traditional 11-day 24/7 book sale. Such was the demand that Big Bad Wolf made a second visit to Myanmar the same year, this time to Mandalay.
Fast forward 2020 and Big Bad Wolf was back in Yangon to another enthusiastic reception. And then the pandemic arrived.
Since then Big Bad Wolf has tested online selling in Indonesia with several events on the Tokopedia site, and has been exploring D2C online sales in countries like Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan, as well as home-country Malaysia.
Now it’s the turn of Myanmar to be offered 20 million English-language books across 40,000 titles via a dedicated Big Bad Wolf Online portal, running 23 December-2 January.
