East India’s second biggest book fair after Kolkata is underway in Tripura as the India love affair with books continues.
As reported here a few days ago, already over 5 million people have visited Indian book fairs this year, spending the USD equivalent of over $5 million, and there’s no sign the appetite for books in anywhere near sated.
Opened by Tripura Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, the twelve-day book fair is one of many planned for the region this year. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said the state government was keen to organise book fairs at the district, sub-divisional and block levels.
Book sellers and publishers from Kolkata, New Delhi, Guwahati besides Tripura are taking part in this year’s book fair along with exhibitors from neighbouring Bangladesh.
Usually the fair kicks off with a big entertainment show, but this year began with a minute’s silence to respect the victims of the JeM terrorist attacks on Thursday.
