The 2026 programming will pay homage to one of my favourite explorers, the legendary Ibn Battuta, who was one of my first introductions to West Africa’s glorious history, back when I was a kid.
The Moroccan Ministry of Culture has confirmed the dates for the 31st International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL), scheduled to take place at the OLM Souissi venue in Rabat from 30 April to 10 May 2026.
This year’s iteration is particularly significant for the international trade, serving as a cornerstone event during Rabat’s tenure as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2026.
Strategic Focus and Market Opportunities
For rights managers, literary agents, and publishers looking to expand into the Francophone and North African markets, SIEL offers a critical entry point. The 2026 edition has designated France as the Guest of Honor, signaling a robust focus on cross-Mediterranean rights trading and translation grants.
The fair typically attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and features over 700 exhibitors from approximately 50 countries. It serves not only as a B2C retail opportunity but as a growing hub for B2B networking within the Maghreb region.
Thematic Direction: Ibn Battuta
The 2026 programming will pay homage to one of my favourite explorers, the legendary Ibn Battuta, who was one of my first introductions to West Africa’s glorious history, back when I was a kid.
This theme aligns with the fair’s broader objective: bridging cultural divides through travel literature and historical narrative. Professionals can expect panels and rights catalogues to lean heavily into travel writing, history, and intercultural dialogue.
Context: Rabat World Book Capital 2026
SIEL is the flagship event of a year-long initiative celebrating Rabat’s selection by UNESCO as the World Book Capital.
This designation acknowledges Morocco’s commitment to literacy and the democratisation of knowledge. The programme aims to reinforce the book industry infrastructure in the region, creating a more sustainable ecosystem for local publishers and increasing import/export fluidity.
Previous UNESCO capitals have seen increased government spending on literary infrastructure, suggesting potential grant opportunities and institutional acquisitions during the fair.
