The EPA’s contributions – particularly its panel discussions – offer valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping the Arab publishing sector.

While Sharjah’s role as Guest of Honour at the 30th Rabat International Book Fair has drawn significant attention, the Emirates Publishers Association (EPA) has quietly carved out its own space at the event, focusing on critical issues facing the publishing industry.

The EPA’s participation highlights the UAE’s commitment to fostering cultural dialogue and supporting independent publishers, even as Sharjah’s dynamic programme takes centre stage.

For publishing professionals, the EPA’s contributions – particularly its panel discussions – offer valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping the Arab publishing sector.

A Strategic Presence

The EPA’s delegation, including Amira BuKadra, Co-Founder of Ghaf Publishing, and Dr. Abdullah Al Sharhan, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Ajyal for Publishing & Distribution, reflects the diversity and innovation of Emirati publishing. Their presence underscores ,per the press release, the UAE’s ambition to expand its cultural influence and strengthen ties with regional and international publishers.

As Rashid Alkous, Executive Director of EPA, noted, the book fair serves as a strategic platform for exchanging expertise and addressing pressing industry issues.

Panel Discussions: Tackling Key Industry Topics

The EPA’s participation culminates in a pivotal discussion session moderated by Rashid Alkous, featuring prominent voices such as Tarek Saliki, President of the Moroccan Publishers Association, and Safaa Wali, Publisher at Fennec Publishing House. The session focusses on three critical topics:

1. Enhancing Book Distribution in the Region

Distribution remains a perennial challenge for publishers in the Arab world. The panel explores innovative strategies to streamline logistics, expand market reach, and ensure that books are accessible to diverse audiences.

2. Book Pricing Mechanisms and Sustainability for Independent Publishers

Pricing is a delicate balancing act – publishers must remain competitive while ensuring profitability. The discussion delves into sustainable pricing models that support independent publishers, who often face financial constraints in a market dominated by larger players.

3. The Role of Government Initiatives in Supporting Local Writers

Government support can be transformative for emerging writers and publishers. The panel examines how targeted initiatives can nurture talent, promote local literature, and drive industry growth.
