The Japan Book Publishers Association. this past week teamed with the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association, the Japan Magazine Publishers Association and the Japan Photographic Copyright Association to issue a joint statement expressing concern that copyright protection law is not keeping up with developments in generative artificial intelligence.
The statement asserted that AI creates content based on the analysis of large amounts of data collected from the internet without the consent of or remuneration to copyright holders.
The group stressed the need to clarify the interpretation of, and decide whether copyright law should be revised, and argued that copyright protection measures should be considered in line with the evolution of technology to “prevent generative AI from hindering cultural development.”
