“There was talk that only an end-of-year miracle. It didn’t happen.”
Nielsen BookScan’s summary of the 2023 Brazil book market makes for depressing reading.
Ismael Borges, Country Manager of the BookScan Brazil division, said: “There was talk that only an end-of-year miracle would save 2023 from a lower result than the previous year. It didn’t happen.”
The report, published by the National Union of Book Editors (SNEL) and as reported by PublishNews, says unit sales were down 7.13% and revenue down 0.78%, with sales of 54.43 million books (58.61 million in 2022) and revenues of R$2.52 billion (R$2.54 billion).
SNEL president Dante Cid remained optimistic, saying, “Literary fairs and festivals and the continuous movement of digital influencers in the last year also show that the market has room to rejuvenate and find new readers.”
