James Daunt isn’t cut out to be a transnational industry tycoon – redux


Ruth Comerford at The Bookseller reports Waterstones has finally got its act together and the new warehouse system, the failings of which have cost publisher and retailers dearly over the summer, are finally sorted.

Well, almost.

As Comerford reports:

a significant volume of unfulfilled orders needs to be worked through” and excessive levels of stock in the chain’s Hub are “hampering efficient operations”.

In other words, my sentiments expressed in TNPS a month ago remain valid –

James Daunt cannot efficiently run two major bookstore chains on either side of the Atlantic.
