Appropriately in this UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages, the Storyines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust has announced a new award for writers in New Zealand’s te reo Māori language.
The award is named after the late Dame Kāterina Te Heikōkō Mataira, who led the revival of the Māori language in the country.
The annual Storylines Dame Kāterina Te Heikōkō Mataira Award will be sponsored by Huia Publishers, reports the Storylines Press Release, and will be open to original (not translated) te reo Māori manuscripts across all genres, fiction and non-fiction, aimed at a children’s or YA audience.
A prize of NZ $1500 (US $970) is up for grabs.
Eligibility criteria can be found on the Storylines website.
